Sporting Wood Bottle Swimmer
Designed by Larry Welcome of NorthBar, this casting swimmer, also known as a bottle plug is an excellent choice for big bass. About 7" long and weighing approx. 3 oz.
Word From Larry:
My version of the 3 oz. Bottle Swimmer is, as always, if possible, to eliminate a third treble hook, so as to not injure a fish any more than necessary. I do this with the 2 oz. Danny-style surface swimmer, the 7" needlefish and other lures that normally come with 3 treble hooks. By doing this I of course have to re-arrange the belly weights and the placement of the remaining belly hook. This takes time and nearly endless proto-typing and often includes changing the tail weight as well. I do all this on my 3 oz. Bottle Swimmer as well as other improvements such as sealing the unpainted lure with a penetrating epoxy prior to painting. I also beef up the lip a bit to help with keeping it intact longer because of contact with rocks and the bottom in shallow water. I paint and clearcoat with polyester resin (2 part) and I do this before the sealer is totally cured so the paint adheres to and cures with the sealer so the entire paint job is a system and not just layers of paint that tend to de-laminate once the clearcoat is nicked or chipped.
